After years of pushing for a new college campus in South San Antonio, local leaders will witness the ground-breaking of Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s first building on Friday.

The site is located on Loop 410 between Zarzamora and Moursund roads. The building will consist of 91,000 square feet of space and will house the library, the bookstore, student services offices, classrooms, faculty and administrative offices and a food service area.

The building is expected to be completed in the summer of 2011. Architectural firm Kell Muñoz designed the building. Bartlett Cocke General Contractors is providing construction management and risk services.

“This groundbreaking is even more significant because of the accompanying 60 percent growth in enrollment for A&M-San Antonio in less than two years,” says Michael D. McKinney, chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. “I fully believe that A&M-San Antonio will achieve our goal of 25,000 students by 2025.”
