Skanska USA has completed construction on the military’s Tri-Service Research Laboratory at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
The project began in 2009 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process to transform Fort Sam Houston into a world-class center for military medical training.
The $70 million, design-build facility will house Navy, Air Force and Army research programs designed to evaluate the health and safety effects of exposure to energy devices. The building houses various laser and biological research labs and echo-free chambers, which will allow each military branch to simultaneously conduct research on the biological effects of directed energy devices.
The building totals 181,000-square-feet. Skanska worked with Jacobs Engineering to provide design services to the military. The project management team also worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Sam Houston, each respective branch and civilian contractors. Skanska is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification for the facility.
Skanska USA is based in New York and has 35 offices throughout the country, including San Antonio. The parent company, Skanska AB, is based in Stockholm, Sweden.
