Texas is seeing the good and the bad of the construction industry — being singled as both the big winner and the big loser in the latest analysis by Arlington, Va.-based Associated General Contractors of America.
Between June and July of this year, Texas posted the largest construction job losses — shedding a total of 6,000 jobs.
The yearly figures for Texas, however, were a bit more encouraging. The Lone Star State added the most construction jobs between July 2010 and 2011 — to the tune of 23,800 jobs.
Nationally, between July 2010 and 2011, employment numbers increased in 26 states, AGC reports.
“When it comes to construction employment, for every state adding jobs there is another one shedding just as many or more,” notes AGC CEO Stephen Sandherr. “The fact that this industry is breaking even when it comes to construction employment is little comfort for many unemployed construction workers.”
