Houston’s Wells Fargo Plaza and Lakewood Church are entered in the 2011 National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings, a competition organized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program.
Starting this week, teams from 245 buildings across the country are competing to see which can reduce energy use the most. There are 26 types of commercial buildings participating, including office towers, retail stores, schools, hotels and museums.
The 71-story Wells Fargo Plaza is a 1.7 million-square-foot Class A office building at 1000 Louisiana in downtown Houston.
Lakewood Church, located at 3700 Southwest Freeway in what used to be the Compaq Center, is led by nationally known pastor Joel Osteen.
Competitors will keep track of their monthly energy consumption, and finalists will be selected in July. The building with the largest percentage reduction among the finalists will be crowned the winner in November.
