San Antonio’s Solid Waste Management Department broke ground Tuesday on a new brush recycling facility on the city’s South Side.
The new facility — to be called the Nelson Road Brush Recycling Center — will be located at 8962 Nelson Road, adjacent to the city’s closed Nelson Gardens Landfill.
San Antonio residents will be able use the facility to dispose of their brush, leaves and grass clippings at a low cost as well as provide city crews with a more efficient location to drop off brush collected in the southern sector.
The facility is also expected to help process the anticipated increase in the volume of brush needing to be recycled, partly stemming from the city’s recently redesigned curbside brush program. As such, the brush generated city-wide is expected to increase from approximately 35,000 tons to approximately 84,000 tons over the next two years.
This new facility is part of the department’s 10-year Recycling and Resource Recovery Plan, which involves achieving a 60 percent residential recycling rate by 2020.
