Books-A-Million is opening up a new store location at Mall del Norte in Laredo, ending the border city’s dubious distinction of being the largest city in the United States without a traditional retail bookseller.
Once B. Dalton Bookstore closed at the mall in December 2009, Laredo made national headlines for not having a bookstore. Laredo residents had to drive 150 miles to the nearest bookstore to buy new releases. However, a group of communication, marketing and library professionals called the Laredo Reads Committee convened to help the mall’s owner lure another retailer.
CBL & Associates Properties Inc. of Chattanooga, Tenn., is the owner and manager of the property. Books-A-Million’s new store location consists of 2,900 square feet of space.
Florence, Ala.-based Books-A-Million is one of the nation’s leading book retailers with more than 200 stores in 19 states.
