The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art broke ground Thursday on Smither Park, a new creative greenspace.
The park is next to the Orange Show Monument near the University of Houston’s main campus.
Phoenix Commotion’s Dan Phillips is designing the park, which will feature a 400-foot memory wall that will allow Houstonians to honor loved ones by leaving behind objects such as tiles.
Included in the plans are an amphitheatre, meditation garden, grove of orange trees, walking trails and a 12-foot custom-built “coin roll” where visitors can watch pennies follow a route through a maze of colorful recycled and repurposed materials.
