Austin Community College District named Skanska USA Building Inc. the construction manager-at-risk for its proposed Elgin campus.

The ACC board approved hiring San Antonio-based Skanska during its monthly meeting on Feb. 7. Skanska was one of three finalists ACC considered, along with Flintco Constructive Solutions and SpawGlass Contractors Inc.

Additionally, ACC’s facilities department recommended that the board select a design/builder for its new solar array project. The $1.2 million solar panel project is utilizing $900,000 in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and a smaller grant from ACC’s Sustainability Fee funds. The solar panel installation is earmarked for a building that houses the automotive, welding and building trade programs.

The board is expected to start soliciting bids for the project after Feb. 21.

During executive session, the board heard a status update on possible real estate opportunities in the Central Austin area. The real estate status updates are part of a land banking initiative for the college, including property acquired last year in Elgin, Leander, San Marcos and Kyle. In the past three months, the school purchased several properties at Austin's Highland Mall, including the Macy’s building, 18 acres and the Dillard's building.
