Houston-based Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Inc. won a $41.5 million contract to build a new joint military reserve facility near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, company officials announced Monday.
The 60-acre project is planned to span about 209,000 square feet on General Aviation Avenue and act as a second phase to an existing aviation support facility, according to past reports.
The bulk of it will be a joint reserve facility serving multiple military branches, including Army Reserves, the Texas State Guard and the Marines.
The center will also include a vehicle maintenance facility and storage building.
Construction is expected to begin early this year and take about a year and a half to complete.
More than 30 companies competed for the contract — awarded by the Texas Adjutant General’s Department — and Satterfield & Pontikes was selected partially due to its performance construction on a $24.1 million Armed Forces Reserve Center in San Marcos, the company said in a press release.
Architects started working on the design for the center in 2003, but several factors delayed the project, including budgetary issues and the construction of a similar center in Round Rock, according to past reports.
There will be an estimated 125 construction workers on site at peak work load during, a government spokesman said.
"We don't anticipate a significant number of new staff jobs to be created for this facility as we intend to move existing force structure from older or over-crowded facilities," he said.
