San Antonio businessman and philanthropist Red McCombs donated $1 million to support the development of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
The Tobin Center, once completed in the fall of 2013, will serve as Bexar County’s performing arts center. Bexar County voters in 2008 approved an extension of the venue tax in order to generate $100 million toward the development of the performing arts center.
The City of San Antonio is providing the land and the buildings, which are worth $41 million. The private sector must raise another $54 million to bring the project to completion. McCombs’ gift of $1 million brings the project closer to completion.
“When Red McCombs gets behind something, it gets done,” says J. Bruce Bugg Jr., chairman of the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation board. “The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be a win for everyone who will attend performing arts events here and a win for San Antonio’s economic development team, giving them a wonderful new asset to make the point that not only are we America’s seventh largest city, but we are also a city dedicated to offering the full cultural experience for San Antonians — and those who might want to be San Antonians.”
The Tobin Center will have a 1,750-seat performance hall with 27 luxury boxes and mezzanine and balcony seating. In addition, the facility will include a 230-seat Studio Theater that can be used for performances, rehearsals and community events.
