Hays County has closed a $1.7 million deal for about 50 acres surrounding Wimberley's historic Jacob's Well swimming hole.
The county and Nature Conservancy of Texas announced in August plans to save the environmentally-sensitive property that was slated for high-density development. Hays split the purchase with borrowed money from the conservancy, using about $850,000 from parks and open space bonds.
The purchase prevents any future building in the spring recharge zone and ends two lawsuits filed by developers and the city of Woodcreek. The additional property doubles the current 46-acre Jacob's Well Natural Area easement and will serve as the first county-owned preserve in western Hays County.
