The organizers behind the proposed Formula One Austin racetrack have submitted designs to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), according to a press release Friday.

Paris-based FIA is the international governing body for motor sports that sanction Formula One races and must certify homologation designs, or those mandated by regulations. The process is meant to ensure fair competition, safety and track integrity.

The $250 million Austin racing complex is expected to open in 2012 and include a welcome center, seminar space and mini kart track, among other amenities. The 3.4-mile circuit will have 20 turns and enough seating for about 120,000 fans.

The project, planned for on about 960 acres in southeast Austin, is being designed by Cowboy's stadium planner HKS Inc. and German-based Tilke GmbH. Dallas-based Austin Commercial is the contractor for the project, which recently received county approval to begin work.
