Temple-based Scott & White Healthcare will break ground later this year on a 26-bed expansion to its Round Rock hospital.
The project will add 58,000-square-feet to its 76-bed medical center on University Boulevard. The expansion will house a combination of ICU and general medical and surgical beds, as well as add four operating rooms and an endoscopy suite. The hospital's emergency department will increase from 11 to 19 beds.
“We anticipated this first phase expansion within four years of opening the hospital and we’re moving ahead with those plans a year earlier than projected,” said Ernie Bovio, CEO of Scott & White Hospital - Round Rock.
Plans also call for renovating 14,000-square-feet of existing space, and later, a new tower and medical office building will be added. In June, the group took over a 33,000-square-foot building at 425 University Blvd. across from the hospital, and is moving 10 specialists to that location.
The hospital, multi-specialty clinic and imaging center, opened in 2007, totals about 272,000 square feet. About 120 primary care physicians and specialists practice in the hospital and 11 clinics in Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Taylor, Hutto, North Austin, Georgetown and Round Rock.

Scott & White Healthcare was founded in 1897 and employs more than 800 physicians and scientist from 60 clinics and nine hospitals statewide. It employs about 12,000 workers total.
Scott & White is the principal clinical teaching setting for the Texas A&M College of Medicine. Early last month it added the Trinity Medical Center Breham to its network, and on Monday it merged with the 25-bed Johns Community Hospital of Taylor.
